Barge Wreck The Gemini

The “Gemini”
Barge (400 cubic metres), sunk 1993

Location:
Lat. 31° 37′ S., Long. 115° 33′ E.

History

The Gemini was one of four barges used to cart spoil from the Cockburn Sound Channel. The vessel has a 400 cubic metre capacity and measures 130 feet long with a beam of 33 feet.

The barge was scuttled in 1993 by John Clark to create an artificial reef for SCUBA divers. The project was assisted by the WA Maritime Museum, the Seaman’s Union and The Royal Australian Navy and has proved to be a tremendous success.

The Wreck

Located in approximately 30 metres of water the structure has been colonised by numerous species of sea-life including reef fishes, Truncate coral fish, Old Wives, soft corals and encrusting sponges.

Huge schools of Kingfish continuously school around the structure and many large crayfish have taken up residence inside the wreck. This dive site has become one of the most popular sites in this area and we regularly run trips for advanced divers.

Divers must always complete a safety stop of at least 3 minutes after diving this wreck. Spear-fishing is not permitted. Reef Charters Dive Boat takes about 30 minutes to reach the wreck from Mindarie Keys.
